Caselberg Retreat down the Bay Resident 21st-28th January 2012

Today's walk along the breezy John Wilson Drive marks the start of building research for an upcoming residency and project.  I saw bees, marshmallow flowers, seagulls, dogs, cyclists and seaweed strewn like calligraphy as I hurried against the weather coming in.  I especially liked the weathered road markings.

Lynn Taylor, Artist, Caselberg Retreat down the Bay Resident 21st-28th January 2012
Lynn will be beginning a new project based  around St Kilda in Dunedin and will focus the week on  working with a recipe book that was published in the St  Kilda community some years ago.  The St Kilda project  concept has been instigated by UK artist Deirdre Nelson (http://www.deirdre-nelson.com/) who is proposing to  investigate and respond to St Kilda's in Scotland, Dunedin and Melbourne. Author Christos Tsiolkas (http://www.allenandunwin.com/default.aspx?page=311&author=536) is the Melbourne link and sometime in 2012 Deidre hopes  to travel to visit both locations and see where working collaboratively takes the creative output.  Lynn very much hopes  that people from the public with stories or photos about St Kilda could come and share them with her through the  residency.

OPEN DAY AT THE CASELBERG HOUSE, Broad Bay, with Artist LYNN TAYLOR
SATURDAY 28TH JANUARY 2012 (open to members of the public)
11.00am – 3.00pm
Lynn Taylor will have the results of the weeks residency on display as well as  some of the book samples which will also be shown at the book binding workshop the following day... there will be an etching press set up  (outside in the garden if a sunny day) and some inks and  paper etc available so people can come and have a go at making a print (free)

Christmas

I have just been inspired by a blog I follow 'Taylor Made' where things to be thankful for are being recorded for 25 days. What a wonderful idea for the spirit of Christmas.  One thing I am repeatedly thankful for is that I had the opportunity to see ancient artifacts in Turkey.  For years I went along to Linden Cowell's historical lectures at Art School and to see what he showed us in slides in front of my eyes in real life was a major high.  I hope you too have much to be thankful for this Christmas.

Cost:        $120.00  ($100.00 for Caselberg Trust members)
                   (bring own lunch)

The Workshop:

Sunday 29th January 2012

Over the last decade there has been an increase in interest in the book arts and the book as a means of expression.  Handmade books are a special place for housing creative writing, narratives and recording artistic or personal images. The intimate nature of a book (not all is revealed at once, it can be touched and held closely to the body) parallels with makers dreaming, journaling, organizing, remembering and decoding.  This course is designed for people interested in the introductory aspects of book binding – the two books you make will be made with plain white paper. You will leave with the skills to bind books in whatever papers you like!

Some of the session will be a taster – a chance to try out some simple ways to make paper backgrounds (which could be integrated into those future book projects) with paint, stamping and gelatin printing.

You will bind a simple ledger using Japanese stab stitching techniques. This style is particularly suitable for making soft books and photo albums.

Then we will sew a book using French Stitching. This creates a decorative flexible exposed spine and so the book will open flat making them suitable for  journals, diaries and recipe books etc.

We will also have a look at some sample books to inspire you for future projects
·         Learn some tips, like the kettle stitch and using a jig for piercing holes!
·         This is a chance to immerse yourself in books – see a slide show of some New Zealand print/book culture and browse through Lynn’s book resources.

Paper, threads, cardboard, paint etc will all be provided but participants please bring with you:
A notebook for taking notes, a camera can be useful for recording stages too
Bone Folder (if you have one)
Cutting mat and knife
Ruler (a metal one is best)
Pencil
Scissors
An old plastic card (can be useful as a palette knife)
Gloves/apron if you want to protect yourself and your clothing.
Medium weight fabric piece for covers (minimum 30 x 40 cm, perhaps bring a few alternatives so you can see what works best on the spot)
Art work/writing and paper that you want to and reconstitute ie. cut up and use as a page or end paper!

Optional:
Bring along any book binding equipment, examples, questions, challenges you may have – we will have a chance to share!
If you have a project you are working on and want to personalize your books then bring any photographs or bits and pieces pertaining to the theme – buttons, threads, ribbons, feathers etc – they may be used/may not!

Art Week at Macandrew Intermediate School

Petra, my friend Julie and I had three busy mornings teaching screenprinting on fabric as part of Macandrew Intermediates Art Week. Cushions, bags and t-shirts galore! We even screen printed over old LP records and hung them in trees like a mysterious fruit.

Shopping in Weavers Alley, Ankara

Chris presenting at Ankara University, Turkey alongside translator İbrahim Pür

My favourite student art work at the University
Chris and I travelled to Ankara University, Turkey to present his paper which included aspects of the lazer /print class we co-taught. I managed to squeeze some shopping in (of course) and was amazed at the amount of stock everywhere: piles of wool, scarves, clothing and sparkly fluffy stuff. I purchased a bit of lace fabric for my daughter, only to find out later it is curtain fabric! Looking back at some of my photos I wish I could pluck things out and buy them but at the time I got pretty overwhelmed with the variety and volume and then there is the problem of having to make a decision on the spot!

hard to make a choice when there is so much!

Artist residency at Heretaunga Intermediate, Hastings

pupils screenprinting layers of dots

September 22nd - 28th I am artist in residence at Heretaunga Intermediate - invited up by art teacher Rosalie Thompson. On Friday we worked together with a group of pupils responding to the work of Yayoi Kusama. They each had an old LP record to decorate - as well as being an appropriate shape this was to give them the experience of seeing how compositions worked when they are rotated and of making a double sided art work. Kusama talks of being obliterated by dots so we had a fun photo shoot with dotty stickers! The works will be hung as an installation until the pupils take their own ones home.  I'm back home on Thursday - in time to get ready for Art in the Garden at Glenfalloch in the weekend.

Pastiche Studio Day

The table - abundant with materials to experiment with
Donna and Lynn looking pretty cheerful

We had an exceptionally creative day at the Diadem Studio - a blend of quick  exercises, discussion, book looking, working on individual projects, printmaking on the 'imprint' press all sustained with cups of tea.   I look forward to seeing everyone's projects further down the track!

Matiu Island

I have been invited to be part of an art research trip to Matiu (or Somes) Island in Wellington Harbour next March - with a view to participating artists making work for a September exhibition. Exciting!
Does anyone have  any resources on this location? (So far I have sourced some envelopes from the island on a stamp collecting site - but prices are out of my reach.)
Some interesting history - the island has served as a human and animal quarantine, an internment camp and a military defence position and then there is the sad tale of neighbouring Leper Island.

Last chance to see Westland exhibition - ends July 31st

What a wonderful journey, then in 1879 and now!  This exhibition has been on tour since 2009 when it opened in Caithness Horizons, Scotland with a parallel exhibition at the Anchorage Art Gallery in New Zealand the same month. Now in An Talla Solais, Ullapool, this is the last venue.  This is what Mandy Haggith had to say about it:

"...I particularly enjoyed the layer upon layer of history and response in Joanne and Lynn’s work. A story from the ship unravels through a string horse and five bottles of whisky. Three aprons (one to protect a dress, the next to protect the first apron, and a third, made out of sacking, to protect the other two) emerge from Lynn’s log book and are given physical form by Joanne. Seeing such an integrated body of work it is incredible to discover that the two artists have never actually met..." Click here to read her review in full.

Lynn Taylor - cyanotypes and logbook
This project is fully documented on Joanne B Kaar's blog http://joannebkaar-mary-anns-cottage.blogspot.com/

Joanne B Kaar - string/rope twined from natural fibres
I'll give the last few words to George Gunn  "This is art with a purpose and it is rare.."   an extract from his review, to read it in full click here.

Laser cutting developments

Lauren is making shoes and playing with material qualities - overprinting lace onto hessian etc.

Rakel - a fashion design student - is imaging Icelandic language as cross stitch on paper, fabric and perspex.

Olivia is printing cups and saucers - because the viscosity of the ink was thick and the plate line deep a very raised ink line was printed - exciting!
It is so exciting seeing the student projects develop - all have written their own project briefs and are working in a multitude of ways.  The laser cutting plates are proving to be really effective with line intaglio and even cardboard is printing beautifully.

laser cut plates

cardboard cut on the laser cutter, trimming before printing

relief - inked roll up - work by design student Finn
emboss print made from a found plate - the negative offcut of someone's butterflies

Some exciting results emerging from experiments with printing laser cut plates - particularly good for embossing and relief prints.
