The Workshop:

Over the last decade there has been an increase in interest in the book arts and the book as a means of expression. Handmade books are a special place for housing creative writing, narratives and recording artistic or personal images. The intimate nature of a book (not all is revealed at once, it can be touched and held closely to the body) parallels with makers dreaming, journaling, organizing, remembering and decoding. This course is designed for people interested in the introductory aspects of book binding – the two books you make will be made with plain white paper. You will leave with the skills to bind books in whatever papers you like!
Some of the session will be a taster – a chance to try out some simple ways to make paper backgrounds (which could be integrated into those future book projects) with paint, stamping and gelatin printing.
You will bind a simple ledger using Japanese stab stitching techniques. This style is particularly suitable for making soft books and photo albums.
Then we will sew a book using French Stitching. This creates a decorative flexible exposed spine and so the book will open flat making them suitable for journals, diaries and recipe books etc.
We will also have a look at some sample books to inspire you for future projects
· Learn some tips, like the kettle stitch and using a jig for piercing holes!
· This is a chance to immerse yourself in books – see a slide show of some New Zealand print/book culture and browse through Lynn’s book resources.
Paper, threads, cardboard, paint etc will all be provided but participants please bring with you:
A notebook for taking notes, a camera can be useful for recording stages too
Bone Folder (if you have one)
Cutting mat and knife
Ruler (a metal one is best)
Pencil
Scissors
An old plastic card (can be useful as a palette knife)
Gloves/apron if you want to protect yourself and your clothing.
Medium weight fabric piece for covers (minimum 30 x 40 cm, perhaps bring a few alternatives so you can see what works best on the spot)
Art work/writing and paper that you want to and reconstitute ie. cut up and use as a page or end paper!
Optional:
Bring along any book binding equipment, examples, questions, challenges you may have – we will have a chance to share!
If you have a project you are working on and want to personalize your books then bring any photographs or bits and pieces pertaining to the theme – buttons, threads, ribbons, feathers etc – they may be used/may not!
